Green Valley Amateur Recap
Monday, March 2, 2020

Green Valley, CA – The GOLF AM Tour had its first ever visit to Green Valley Country Club on Monday for a local event at the old-school private club. Unfortunately it was one of the windiest days we’ve ever had on Tour, but players were treated to a golf course that was in absolutely spectacular shape on Monday. The greens typically roll super pure and lightning quick at GVCC, but add in little to no rain of late and wind gusts up to 35+ mph and the putting surfaces were about as treacherous as they get out there. Normally a course where you have the opportunity to go low, Green Valley played very tough on Monday given the conditions, so it was more about damage control than filling it up with birdies. Here were your top finishers from a fun day on Monday:

Tyrell Rohrer, out of Long Beach, was your winner in the Championship flight and tournament medalist on Monday. Rohrer posted (+3) 75 to win the flight by two shots over Chris Goin (77). After starting with a double bogey on the relatively easy par-five 1st hole, Rohrer bounced back in a big way and rattled off three birdies over his next six holes to get it to one-under-par on the front nine. He was able to hang on to his lead on the tough back nine to secure his third victory of the 2019-2020 season. He sits in second place in the Los Angeles Tour Championship flight standings.

The largest margin of victory on the day came in the Palmer flight on Monday, as San Martin’s Justin Alonzo posted a very solid round of (+7) 79 to win it by seven shots over nearest finisher Matthew Fegley (86). Alonzo now has four wins on Tour this season, including one on Saturday at Corica Park and again at GVCC on Monday, and he is now just 160 points behind the Palmer flight Race to Nationals lead.

Joe Roberson, out of East Palo Alto, was your champion in the Senior Palmer flight on Monday. Roberson carded a (+8) round of 80 to win the flight by four shots over Richard Brown (84). Monday was Roberson’s third victory of the 2019-2020 season, so he is now qualified for Senior Nationals at Sunriver Resort in September. Roberson will look for his fourth win on Sunday at Silverado.

Pittsburg’s Mario La Macchia was your champion in the Hogan flight on Monday. La Macchia posted (+10) 82 to win the flight by two strokes over runner-up finisher Sean Harrigan (84). La Macchia has now won two of four events on Tour since returning from some time off. He has shot all the way up to fifth place in the Hogan flight standings with his great play in those four events.

Gary Addison, from nearby Fairfield, was your champion in the Senior Hogan flight on Monday. Addison posted (+14) 86 to win the flight by a single stroke over Matt Ratliff (87). Monday was Addison’s second victory in just four events played in 2019-2020. The 115 points earned on Monday now has Addison in a tie for second place in the Sacramento Senior Hogan flight standings.

The Sarazen flight was won by Concord resident Jose Espinoza on Monday. Espinoza came in at (+11) 83 to win the flight by five shots over nearest finisher Julian Noh (88). Monday was Espinoza’s third W of the 2019-2020 season, so he is now qualified for the 2020 National Championship at Sunriver Resort in September. The 175 points earned on Monday moved Espinoza up to ninth place in the very competitive Sarazen flight Race to Nationals standings.

A tightly contested Jones flight was won by Alamo’s Meg Walsh on Monday. Walsh fired a (+25) 97 to win the flight by one stroke over Richard Bernard (98) and two over Sam Rowe (99). Monday was Walsh’s first victory of the 2019-2020 season and she’ll look to keep the momentum going at Silverado on Sunday, where she will be defending her 2019 championship.

Charles OBriant, out of Brentwood, was your champion in the Snead flight on Monday. OBriant carded a solid round of (+21) 93 to give him a six shot victory over Jerry Matacia (99). Monday was OBriant’s first W of the 2019-2020 season and we’ll see him again at Silverado on Sunday where he’ll look to string together victories.
