Timber Creek Championship Recap
Sunday, February 9, 2020

Roseville, CA – The GOLF AM Tour’s Sacramento section had a local tournament at the popular Timber Creek Golf Club at Sun City on Sunday. It was a cold and windy day throughout Northern CA on Sunday so scoring conditions were very difficult. With winds hovering between 20-30mph and gusting to 35mph+ it was a day that favored solid ball strikers on a course that can be penal if you’re not hitting it straight. Here were your top finishers who were able to “survive” Timber Creek best on Sunday:

Johnny Frink, out of Rancho Cordova, was your winner in the Championship flight and co-medalist on Sunday. Frink was one-under on his final three holes to post (+8) 80 and edge out Rocky Shaw (81) by one stroke. This is now the third year in a row that Frink has won Timber Creek Championship, but Sunday was Frink’s first win of the 2019-2020 season. He is now in sixth place in the Championship flight standings after earning 105 points for the W.

Stockton’s William Rios was your champion in the Palmer flight and co-medalist on Sunday as he carded (+8) 80 to win Palmer by four shots over nearest finisher Ray Gregorich (84). The victory was Rios’s second of the season in just three events and the 115 points earned on Sunday moved him into the lead in the Palmer flight standings.

Another four shot victory was the tale of the tape in the Hogan flight on Sunday, as Issac Harris posted (+12) 84, with runner-up finisher Darrel Gordon carding (+16) 88. Sunday was the second victory of the season (and second in a row) for Harris and he has now crept to within 250 points of the Hogan flight points standings after earning 175 points on Sunday.

Chris Mateo, out of Mountain View, was your champion in the Senior Hogan flight on Sunday. Mateo posted a great round of (+9) 81 to win the flight by three shots over Patrick Wilson (84). Mateo was four-over-par through two holes, but was able to put together a very solid round after that. Sunday was Mateo’s second win of the 2019-2020 season and he now has a 285 point lead in the Senior Hogan flight standings.

The Sarazen flight was won by San Jose resident Jessie James on Sunday. James came in at (+11) 83 to win the flight by three shots over Walter Bouchard (86). It was the veteran’s first win of the 2019-2020 season and the 175 points earned on Sunday stretched his lead in the Bay Area Senior Sarazen flight standings to 400 points.

A tightly contested Jones flight was won by Brentwood’s Diane Ventling on Sunday. Ventling fired a (+22) 94 to win the flight by one stroke over Sam Rowe and Michael Wright (95s) and three other players that came within five shots of the lead. Sunday was Ventling’s second victory of the 2019-2020 season and she now has a lofty 530 point lead in the Senior Jones flight standings with six tournaments under her belt thus far.

Justin Kitt, out of Grass Valley, picked up right where he left off from last season and won the Snead flight on Sunday by shooting (+21) 93, four better than Loran Polete (97). The reigning Snead flight Player of the Year is now one-for-one on the season and racked up a big 175 points on Sunday to start his run at qualifying for Nationals and returning to the NorCal Cup.
